Essence

Synopsis:
Walls surround the city, hemming the citizens in and protecting them from what is beyond, but they are far from safe. So-called witches run rampant within the walls, hunted by the Inquisitor and his Guards who fear the powers their prey possess.

In the aftermath of one witch’s execution, Frit and Sol meet by chance. From vastly different places in society, these two form an unlikely friendship. They grow closer while they deal with the difficulties of their lives brought on by their fathers and the growing conflict between witches and Guards. Can their relationship survive the struggle?

This story is the first look at the part of my universe I have spent possibly the most time developing. The “witches” and the “Enemy” within this story both play a huge role in the universe as a whole and you will be seeing much more of them as I continue to write. This is but a brief glimpse into what they are and what they can do.
This story does take place in the same universe as the other stories I have written, including all of those on the website. It is the latest in the timeline that I have written thus far, but have plans for more beyond this. These characters have an impact on the direction of the universe following this story.
I wrote this story imagining it being like a play in that it has a limited setting, most of the action taking place in one or two locations, with few set changes.
This was a unique story for me for many reasons. I’ve never written one in this structure or one that covers this much time. I’ve never written a female POV character before. There are a couple of other things I’ve never done before, but I won’t list them because they could give away the best parts of the story.
