Reviews of books and movies

We’re the Millers

Funny.  This movie certainly had my sides aching by the end.  So many parts were just ridiculously funny.  What wasn’t funny was on the awkward side however.  Do not take the youngsters.  If you’re over 17, avoid seeing it with the family.  The…moral I guess, was great despite it using crude ideas in there as well.  Not sure what else to say on it, but be sure to watch it if you don’t mind some raunchy and drug related scenes.

Now You See Me

MIND BLOWING.  Now You See Me is one of those rare films that comes out that makes you just think “Wait what?”  The story is gripping and full of turns and when you get to the end… well let’s just say I have not been that surprised and amazed but a few times in my relatively short life.  I greatly respect anyone and everyone involved in the creation of this story and the movie as a whole.

The style of the film is quite gripping as well.  The effects are beautiful and I am as amazed at the screen rendition of the magic tricks as I would be by the tricks themselves.  Beautiful film full of many of my favorite actors.  This movie has made it onto my favorite movies list for sure.

White House Down

Basically Olympus Has Fallen, but different enough.  Both films have basically the same storyline but portray it in very different ways.  White House Down had a great balance between humor and suspense.  The characters were like able and well played.  The film was less rugged than it could have been, but that suited its tone.  This movie is great for action lovers, but even if you aren’t, still see it

After Earth

I’ve read some reviews that said After Earth was boring and the acting was terrible… I disagree completely.  Sure there wasn’t non-stop action, but it was interesting.  You don’t have to have lots of action in a movie for it to be gripping.  The action and suspense grab your attention while the emotional side holds it.  They did a great job showing why the characters are the way they are and getting you to like them.  The story itself was thrilling and driven by the characters.

As for the acting, I thought it was pretty good.  I’m no expert in this area, but I do know characters.  One of the common complaints is that Will Smith just sat there and was emotionless, well that’s the point.  His character is reserved and not meant to show much emotion.  This supposed bad acting was really Will being perfectly in character.  Jaden did a great job portraying his character as well, especially since there was little human interaction in the film and it was probably mostly filmed using green screens.  Overall, great film.  I would have liked to have seen more about the world they are from and more about the people there, but it was still good without it.

The Internship

Alright this movie was pretty good, but it was seriously just one big Google commercial.  Commercial-ness aside, it was a good movie.  The story was good and the morals were also good.  It was a little cliché, but they did a good job of putting a unique twist to it.  Had some good humor in it to add to the story.  Some parts were painful to watch because of how awkward or nerdy they were, but it added to the movie.  As a whole I would recommend this movie, but not to the younger population.

Man of Steel and World War Z

Alright, here’s my first movie review.  I saw both of these movies together, so I am going to rate them together.  This is going to be kinda short and basic, partly because I saw them at a drive-in and was falling asleep during them.

Between the two I have to say I preferred World War Z, despite enjoying superhero movies over zombie ones.  In my humble opinion Man of Steel was choppy and hard to follow (and honestly a little boring) for the first half.  It jumped around a lot and was hard to follow.  There wasn’t much action going on either, it was mostly setting up for future action.  But after the real story begins and Earth comes under attack it get better.  The story gets linear and there is more going on.

World War Z was excellent as a movie.  I generally don’t enjoy horror or suspense type movies, but this one was great.  The story was similar to most zombie movies out there, but they did a good job making the movie unique.  It flowed well throughout the entire film, I was never lost.  I felt for the characters and feared for myself.  The director did a great job and so did the writer.   I’ll be watching this one again.
