My poetry

We Took a Life

This poem I wrote as a stream of consciousness, then went back and started editing, as I do many poems.  But as I was doing this I felt like I was taking some of the soul out of it.  I felt like this one just needed to be raw, so I am going to include both the abridged, somewhat edited version and the original stream of consciousness in this post.

Abridged version:

Another life we ended today
Its light washed away
By this war of “we” and “they.”
A nameless casualty
For rights and wrongs.
Another life you took today
With every word you say
Against your neighbor in this way.
Not one syllable will he hear
As every letter wears your soul.
Another life we gave to hate
Telling our neighbor to fear his mate.
Another life we took today
Not of the stray
We love far less
But of ourselves so filled with hate
We forget the word we stand for
Has four letters of its own:

Look out for those who cannot see
Obey the word of your father
Value no thing above your brother
Endeavor for a world of peace

An order we were given
By the commander of life
But it only is applied
Where it is needed least.
Our orders are simple:
To be patient, to be kind,
To be as our greatest calling.
To have faith, to have hope,
To have the greatest of them all.
Another life we have taken today
With hate as our speech
Each and every day.

Original:

Another life we ended today
Its light snuffed out
By this war of righteousness
A nameless casualty
For rights and wrongs.
Another life we gave to hate
Telling our neighbor to fear his friend.
An order we were given
By the commander of life
But we only apply it
Where it is needed least.
We beg others to stop feeding the fire
While we carry logs of our own.
Each of us driven by a desire
To do what is right
We fall to the lies told of those
The wicked labels our enemy.
Blind by the story told by those
Who lead us astray
We ignore the guidance of the light
Leading to the joy we we claim to preach.
Another life we took today
Not of our neighbor
We love far less
But of ourselves so filled with hate
We forget the word we stand for
Has four letters of its own:

Look out for those who cannot see
Obey the word of your father
Value no thing above your brother
Endeavor for a world of peace

Another life you took today
With every word you say
Against your neighbor in this life.
Not one syllable will he hear
As each and every letter tears down your soul.
When I bow my head tonight
For our broken minds I pray.
When hate becomes our language
The enemy takes his lap.
Every word brings with it a tear
So no longer do I hear
The truth we claim to believe.
Our orders are simple:
To be patient, to be kind,
To be as our greatest calling.
To have faith, to have hope,
To have the greatest of them all.
Another life we have taken today
And every day we let hate be our speech.

The Monster That Controls Me

This is the second of the two poems I’ve written recently. Be sure to read the first here

The Monster That Controls Me

I am not the monster that controls me.
I am the defeated the world has not seen.
He whispers to me that I am steady
While ripping me apart before I’m ready.
He tells me I don’t need a team,
But doing this alone feels like a dream.

The smile on my face is a beast of its own,
I cannot control it, it sits on a throne.
Everything I say comes with the wrong tone,
What should be a shout instead is a groan.

I am the knight in shining armor
Who waits for his damsel, who doesn’t know her,
To save him from his dragons, who treat him unsure
And put him on down like a mad cur.

When will someone see
That a monster controls me?
There is a door, but I am without key.
When will someone come and let me be free?

The Man Asked For

This is first of two poems I’ve been working on over the last couple of days.  Be sure to read the second here

I’m banging on the glass to catch your eye.
Or am I just curled up on the floor?
I beg for you to hear me cry.
Or am I just talking to the door?
Raging within, a storm and a fire,
Somehow a secret hidden by the liar.

Sick of who I’ve been before,
Why can’t I be the man asked for?
A man without fear,
A lover with heart so clear.
Of me, all I plead
Is to open my book for all to read.
How do I get my heart tattooed to my sleeve?

A million words inside do swarm
To come out their only form
Is a disguising drip, a uniform.
Can someone less alone
Show me how my top might be blown
And the words flood out like a cyclone?

Moth in a Jar

Like a beast trapped and caged
I claw at the walls that I have built,
Defeated in this war I’ve waged,
Forever cursed to die and wilt.

Like a moth in a jar set by a light,
I can see what I want, but with all my might
I can never seem to win this fight.
The glass between I cannot break
For all I wish to take.

It’s right in front of me, all I long to save,
Instead I’ve just cuffed myself to the grave.
My struggle may forever last,
Smothered by the darkness I have cast.
Fear and doubt of the mask I play
Afraid of what I want to say.

Occupied, my heart waits for you to liberate.
Inside I’ve hidden my gold and jewels
That are yours if only you roll the stone away.
Break the ice of doubt and fear
And you my heart of warmth will seek to repay.
Through my fear I’ve surrendered tools,
Please take them up and extricate.

Take You Back

Somehow I keep finding myself writing poetry. Oh well, at least I’m not having to read it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If I could, I do pray,
I would take you back to yesterday
And show you I may
The girl that you did slay.
Instead I am harassed
Sitting here just killing the past.
I cannot take all that you took from me,
But I will take all that you see.
My love I so had,
In trust I was clad.
‘Twas victory your side held so firmly
Until you came and shattered me
Like your precious sanity.
With undefendable reason
You drew us both to treason,
Now we’re soldiers and we’re in season
So here is blood to sink your knees in.
Take my hand and do this dance,
Our ever changing stance.
The time is now
For you to bow
My love I so had,
In trust I was clad.
‘Twas victory your side held so firmly
Until you came and shattered me
Like your precious sanity.
By our side great beasts of fire
Fight and never tire
With flame and fury all do admire
Until the world smothers this great flier.
So with sword and claw
We tear this world and set our law.
By death alone may it be stopped
So step right up and take what’s not been dropped.
My love I so had.
In trust I was clad,
‘Twas victory your side held so firmly
Until you came and shattered me
Like your precious sanity.
Your life was forfeit
The moment you entered my life.
That blade you laid wherever it would fit
Granted me your world of strife,
The control you kept was merely feint.
A life you had so full and free
Until you came and shattered me
Like your precious sanity
Before I get the question: yes, this is from the point of view of a character. It is actually a sneak peek at the books I am working on.
I am a Fighter
Finished this poem a while back, but never got around to posting it. More work went into this one than probably any others I have done. Not perfect, but I hope you enjoy it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

I am a fighter deep inside
I can’t believe this heart is mine
Too long I trust this dream in time
The end is come I can’t deny

T’was long ago we saw the light
Tomorrow comes another lie
Today we are the beasts who cry
In time the lie will cry to light

I hear this pride so deep inside
I will not fight the war they strive
Now love will try to beat the tide
You cannot come we will divide

Inside a hole you’ve torn so wide
Your face is all I cannot hide
When in this war I watch them die
Tonight we cry for all that’s right

Retrieve me now for now’s my time
Declare no more I cannot fight
At home she waits for dying light
Unknown tonight will end her strife

Now home I am in pain I lie
All I’ve had torn is but my life
Deep inside I know it would hide
Bring her here before I subside

Its breath I hear it’s on my ear
Inside me now is not but fear
Corrupted is its evil cheer
I will not die I disappear

I will become its engineer
Who might I be it’s so unclear
Keep you away I am sincere
It’s through her heart I’m sure I’ll spear

What is this pain I feel so strong
But now my ear hears only song
One voice alone can pierce the throng
The war inside me that is wrong

Inside my head I heard its cries
The Deep is lost I know it’s ties
A Glimpse through time has shown me why
I only wish more time to sigh

Your face no longer can I hide
To you is where my home may lie
No longer with this fear inside
I gave them all they were denied

The war they strive for ends in time
No longer will my brothers die
Within the shadow dying light
All come home they will live tonight

A Glimpse through time with transient light
Long through my veins it burns so bright
Now come with me we will take flight
Great worlds of power give us sight

Expression

I had to write a couple more poems for school. We were told to write a poem that expresses ourselves. The first one has a very literal expression of what I was thinking, though it is somewhat hidden. Enjoy.

Poem 1

Inside is an ocean,
How vast is beyond your ken.
An endless reserve,
To be tapped, or
Even overflow.

To few is this
Home exhibited.
In confidence it is held; a
Secret to be kept with but
A soul of one or two.

So many slide on by,
Shut off by a wall strong as China’s. The
Inane of empty faces
Guards the gate like heart of jewel, with
Never a day off, as the
Minotaur guards its labyrinth.

Every angle perceives it different,
Never showing the whole illustration,
Terrible and terrific is its presentation

Poem 2

A silent gate, black and cold,
Open to some, but not to all.
Expressionless, its face
Refuses its welcome
To many a wanderer.

To many a wanderer,
What behind it lays,
Remains unseen.
An open world
Of endless possibilities.

Of endless possibilities,
Of creation and fun,
The land can’t less be looked upon.
As a battlefield, it is fogged,
The few with admission never
See the light.

See the light,
(The world renewed)
Of angels and demons,
A war half seen.
Secrets untold
And treasures unnumbered,
In a joyous Mordor hidden behind
A silent gate, black and cold.

Moment of Definition

Well, I had to write another poem for school so I thought I might as well put it on here. I really wrote 3 poems, each better than the last. I didn’t find the first two good enough to be graded on, so I didn’t submit them, but I will post them on here anyway. The first one I literally wrote at 3am, so it isn’t anywhere near my usual skill level, but it was a good place to start from. I’m sure you can see how one led to the other, especially with one stanza. Now, here they are:

This is the first one. I focused more on the structure of the stanzas on this one rather than the sound or meaning. No editing done.

At the edge,
Ready for the end.
Forgetting my pledge.
With nothing left to contend.

No

There is much yet to undergo.
The light in the distance,
Barely a faint glow.
Much resistance

Nothing to my ability,
My invincibility.

I am a dragon against mice.
Hercules and the hound.
You are a giant,
My name is David.

Burning like fire
Perforates my soul.
Taking muscles and lungs alike.

Cold and heat
Fight for dominance.
Each ripping me apart
From separate sides.

Metal or blood?
The taste that taints my tongue.
The end
Is all I see.

There is nothing I cannot beat.
I will find my way to dominance.
All in my way, feel free to depart.
I will change the tides.

Though I may tire
I will remain in control.
My body will not go on strike.

Every cell is a piece of rice,
Grain giving power to pound.
I am strong and defiant,
With a ferocity almost rabid.

I get stability
Through my adaptability.

No assistance
Is needed for me to go.
My strength is persistence.
There is nothing I cannot undergo.

Know

Any challenges thrown at me I transcend.
I must not fall off of the ledge.
I will learn to contend
At the edge.

This is the second one. Just kind of wrote it as it came to me, though I was trying to make it kind of more like a song. Not sure I really succeeded there. No editing done.
Sometimes you feel
That you are done.
That you cannot beat this ordeal.
That is a lie.

Sometimes you ask why?
Why has this demon awoken?
You are an eagle wanting to fly,
But your wings have been clipped.

Let me pull you from your crypt.
Let me show you the way through.
I will hand you a script
Follow it to victory.

I am a dragon against mice.
Hercules and the hound.
You are a giant,
My name is David.

Anything I can overcome.
Never alone I win.
What is failure?
Follow it with victory.

Is the Reaper chasing you?
The dark smothering you, smothering your soul?
Take the light of a Silmaril,
Follow it to victory.

Does it burn?
Your heart, your lungs?
The taste that taints your tongue,
Is it metal, is it blood?

I am a dragon against mice.
Hercules and the forked tongues.
You are a giant,
My name is David.

Anything I can overcome.
Never alone I win.
What is failure?
Follow it with victory.

That ache, that strain,
Permeating your form,
Is strength cloaked as pain.
Follow it to victory.

Though this may sound contradictory,
It is truer than blood.
Listen to this documentary.
Overcome this wall.

I am a dragon against mice.
Hercules and the swine.
You are a giant,
My name is David.

Anything I can overcome.
Never alone I win.
What is failure?
Follow it with victory.

And finally the one that I actually turned in. I’m proud of this one. Not the best poem ever, but I’m not a poet by choice, so I am proud of how it turned out.
Our moment of definition
Is the moment we give in.
The moment where it seems impossible.

When your tongue is tainted with the taste
Of metallic defeat.
Every breath is stopped
In the desert that has become your throat.

In that moment your eyes drop
You welcome the cool darkness
Introduced by your lids.

Fire ferociously tears your fibers.
Muscles feel an earthquake that comes from within,
Ravaging every cell, every protein.

Moist cold and dry burning
Fight for dominance.
Each threaten to claw away
Every ounce of strength.

Everything shuts down,
Blocks it out.
The pain.

This is the moment
Where anything is truly possible.

That fire searing your muscles
Becomes the fire guiding your passion,
Driving you into action.

Metallic defeat is now
Steel-hardened victory
Landing you in history.

Cool and dark
Drive you to become
A larger sum.

Tremors compile
Becoming the force
To make you stronger than a horse.

All that is needed
Is for you to make a decision,
And tell yourself with precision:

I am a dragon against mice.
Hercules and the hound.
You are a giant,
My name is David.

Then succeed.

As always, feel free to leave feedback or comments.

Rise Again

Here’s another quick poem I threw together not long ago.  I know I’m posting as many poems as stories despite saying I would probably not, but right now I don’t have time to write anything, so you’re getting some poems.  I won’t keep you any longer.  Here it is, Rise Again:

I am the coming.
I am the returning.
I am the ending.

You will not see my arrival,
I will be there before you know.
Think nothing but of your survival
When I come to fight my rival

Of change there is much to undergo,
For us to rise again.
The whole world will be aglow
We will do as we did it long ago

Those that think they’re leaders are chessmen,
Controlled on a field of the world.
Say goodbye to your kinsmen
They will be left in the pig pen

The air will be swirled,
Because of my rage.
The flags will be unfurled
To fight my scales knurled

The whole world is my stage,
I am the primary exemplar.
The start of a new age
None will be able to disengage.

Complete with my mortal scar,
I am the rebirth.
The lighting star
The final bar.

I am what guides your feet.
I am what hides under your bed.
You are not in control.

Wings of Destruction

Alright here is the first piece of my own work.  This is a poem/song I wrote a while back but just now decided to post it.  Probably one of the few poems you will see from me as they are not my strong suit, nor do I overly enjoy writing them.  Enjoy:

Wings of Destruction

In the mountains long ago,

Amongst all the stone and snow,

Stood a castle, big and strong.

Their wisdom men got it wrong

For one day, despite their glory

Came a battle, long and gory

The beast came from the hills above

Upon wings of death and wings of destruction

A fiery blaze tore down their construction

Nothing escaped, no man or do-ove

Thousands of men fought the beast

Doing nothing but offering a feast

For the devil, horns and all

Only the smart heed the call.

Armor of scales blocked the desperate

The fighting nothing close to temp’rate

The beast came from the hills above

Upon wings of death and wings of destruction

A fiery blaze tore down their construction

Nothing escaped no man or do-ove

Of the rubble nothing stood,

All was felled, stone and wood

Treasure was empty, gold and jewel

Nothing was left of the rule

It made its way back to de-en

It was never seen again

The beast came from the hills above

Upon wings of death and wings of destruction

A fiery blaze tore down their construction

Nothing escaped no man or do-ove

In the mountains long ago,

Amongst all the stone and snow,

Stood a castle, big and strong.

Their wisdom men got it wrong
